“What is the best part of waking up? Apparently it’s  living a long time. In a 13 year study involving 400,000 men and women, those who drank coffee were less likely to die from chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Researchers aren’t ready to say that coffee prevents these things but coffee does contain a lot of anti-oxidants. No word on the quality of the coffee consumed, but if it was that crappy stuff, longevity may not have been worth it.”

Are men about to live longer than women?

Elderly man living longer Men living longer than women now seems like a distinct possibility according to a range of studies and statistics.

For example, a study by Professor Les Mayhew of the UK Office for National Statistics, proposes that male life expectancy is increasing at a greater rate than that of women. Key factors include less men working in heavy industry, lower rates of smoking and improved health care, especially for heart disease.

Men are also increasing their life expectancy at a higher rate than women according to a 2011 study by Dr Chris Murray of the Institute for Health Metric and Evaluation at the University of Washington.  Again, smoking is a factor with far more women smoking relative to men, obesity rates becoming higher in women and increasing rates of heart disease among women.

Similar results have come out from the insurance industry.  Research suggests the “ladette” culture of smoking and boozing are thought to be making a significant impact on the life expectancy of women.  The lifespan gap between men and women has also decreased.

Frankly, I found this video, too long, too detailed and too slow for my liking.  It is a fascinating topic though and he does seem to have some answers to longer life.

How to live longer has been a goal of mankind since earliest times. Some sought a quick solution to living longer in the legendary Fountain of Youth which reputedly restored the youth of anyone who drank of its waters. These waters were also spoken of among indigenous peoples of the Caribbean during the Age of Exploration and one story  tells of a Spanish explorer who  was searching for the Fountain of Youth when he called in to what is now named Florida in the early 16th century.
